asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much rate relief has been given in respect of properties owned by Help the Aged.

As a registered charity, Help the Aged would be entitled to mandatory rate relief of 50 per cent. of properties that the organisation occupies itself and uses for charitable purposes. In addition local authorities have powers to grant further relief on such properties of up to 100 per cent., at their discretion. Information on the provision of such relief to individual organisations is not available centrally.
