HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 cc266-9W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied that National Health Service professionals in the field of perinatal and neonatal mortality at present have both the clinical and genetic training to diagnose and to counsel patients with genetic problems and to interpret the results of complex genetic tests; what steps he is taking to provide training for those health workers seeking it; where the regional centres are at present and where such training can be obtained.

Mr. John Patten

The responsibility for postgraduate medical education and training rests with the relevant royal colleges and professional bodies, and for pre-registration training with the General Medical Council. Doctors working in the field of perinatal medicine need to be able to counsel patients and their families on the risks of transmission of inherited or partly inherited conditions and to diagnose these where possible. We are reasonably satisfied that this need is taken into account in the professional training programmes arranged for them. Referral of complicated cases to a specialist centre may be necessary at times, and for such cases the regional advisory centres and clinics listed have been established. Opportunities for additional training may be provided in these centres.
