HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 c262W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why his Department does not collect information on unemployment amongst doctors; and if, in view of the costs involved in training doctors, he will now do so.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We already collect a large range of statistics relevant to the planning and control of medical manpower. We see no need at the moment to collect information specifically on medical unemployment, since there is no evidence that any significant number of doctors are unemployed. There are still some medical posts in certain specialties in certain parts of the country that we are unable to fill.
