HC Deb 15 March 1984 vol 56 cc214-5W
Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will define the strategic role of the British Army of the Rhine.

Mr. Stanley

The British Army of the Rhine forms part of the United Kingdom's contribution to NATO's ready and in-place forces in Europe which support the Alliance's deterrent strategy of flexible response and forward defence and has been assigned the defence of a vital 65 km sector of the inner German border.
