HC Deb 14 March 1984 vol 56 c170W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many United States air force personnel were summoned by a British court for a criminal offence in each year since 1975; and how many are currently in a British prison.

Mr. Stanley

Information from the United States authorities is that the number of United States Air Force personnel summoned by a British court in each year since 1975 is as follows:

Numbers
1976 2,145
1977 2,136
1978 2,375
1979 2,298
1980 2,288
1981 2,205
1982 2,188
1983 2,429

Of these, an average of some 2,000 offences each year were for traffic offences. At the present time five United States Air Force personnel are in British prisons.

Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many United States air force personnel in the United Kingdom have been returned to the United States of America after committing offences chargeable under British law, but not brought before a British court, for each year since 1979.
