HC Deb 14 March 1984 vol 56 cc170-1W
Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence by what regulation members of Her Majesty's forces are barred from full membership of trade unions.

Mr. Stanley

In order to assist service men who wish, on discharge, to take up civilian occupations as trade union members, all three services have arrangements whereby service men can join trade unions as subscribing members whilst still in the services providing they assume no obligation to their unions beyond the regular payment of their subscriptions. This is set out in the service administrative instructions of the individual services.

Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many service men in Her Majesty's forces are members of trade unions.
