HC Deb 13 March 1984 vol 56 c111W
Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy on road building and improvement in the Falkland Islands.

Mr. Whitney

The first priority has been to carry out repair work to the roads in and around Stanley, including the road to the existing airport, in conjunction with the Ministry of Defence. We do not believe an elaborate road network through the islands can be justified because the traffic volume would be low but the maintenance costs would be a very heavy financial burden on the Falkland Islands Government. We intend to continue work on the partially constructed road from Stanley to Darwin and to improve tracks in selected areas elsewhere as necessary.
