asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what evidence he has that the assisted places scheme will play a significant part in the raising of educational standards.

Mr. Dunn

The primary aim of the scheme, in which it has been highly successful, is to widen opportunities for bright pupils from less well-off families. However, my right hon. Friend would expect this increased competition to have a beneficial effect on standards.
