HC Deb 12 March 1984 vol 56 c1W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Prime Minister what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards the level of real wages.

The Prime Minister

Except where they are the employer, it is not for the Government to determine wage levels. That is a matter for employers and employees. The Government have set the framework for sustained non-inflationary growth, which can lead to rising employment and real wages. But business must not fritter away its opportunities by allowing unit wage costs to rise faster than those of its overseas competitors.
