HC Deb 12 March 1984 vol 56 cc12-3W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, pursuant to the reply of 8 March, if he will identify in what category of overseas trade statistics his Department includes the export of anti-nerve gas kits, gas-masks and protective suits; what other exports are included in these categories; to which countries goods in these categories were exported; and what were the total value of such exports to each country in each of the last five years.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

It is not clear at present where anti-nerve gas kits would fall within the statistics. Gas masks and similar respirators, other than those for use in civil aircraft, are included with breathing appliances of all kinds against code number 9018–5900 under SITC (R2) Item 872.03. Protective articles of apparel, including industrial and occupational clothing, would fall under a variety of Items covering outer garmens of different kinds and materials within SITC (R2) division 84.

The remaining information requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost, but if the hon. Member cares to consult the published volumes of the United Kingdom Overseas Trade Statistics, and the guide to the classification for overseas trade statistics, these are available in the Library.
