HC Deb 09 March 1984 vol 55 c723W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the effects of duty increases on petrol of (a) two pence, (b) five pence, (c) seven-and-a-half pence and (d) 10 pence on (i) Government revenue, (ii) the cost of living index and (iii) inflation.

Mr. Hayhoe

The estimates are as follows:

Change in excise duty per gallon (i) Full year revenue yield (ii) RPI impact effect
(pence) (£ million) (per cent)
2 115 less than 0.1
5 280 0.1
420 0.2
10 560 0.3

The ultimate effect on inflation depends upon many factors and cannot be reliably estimated.
