HC Deb 09 March 1984 vol 55 cc734-5W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will provide details of the number of stoppages in the newspaper industry, notified to his Department, month by month, in each of the past five years.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information is as follows:

1979 1980 1981 1982 1983
January 2 1 2
February 1 2 2 2
March 3 3 1 4
April 1 3 2 3

August 1 1 1 2
September 1 2 5 1 1
October 1 2 3 2
November 2 1 2 5
December 2 1 2

The figures for 1983 are provisional.

Individual stoppages are shown in the month in which each began. The number of stoppages in progress in any month may therefore be higher than indicated in the table.

The figures do not include small stoppages—those involving fewer than 10 workers or lasting less than one day unless the aggregate number of working days lost exceeds 100.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many days were lost through industrial action in the newspaper industry in each of the past 10 years.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information is as follows:

Year Working days lost
