§ Mr. Pawseyasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how much compensation was paid by the Post Office in 1983; and how this compares with 1973.
§ Mr. TrippierCompensation for letters increased from £217,000 in 1972–73 to £1,760,000 in 1982–83. These figures are not directly comparable, however, because there was no compensation scheme for ordinary letters in 1972–73 and because the amount the Post Office is prepared to pay in individual cases increased in this period by 800 per cent. for recorded delivery and 480 per cent. for registered letters. These figures include losses on British Rail.
