HC Deb 07 March 1984 vol 55 c588W
Mr. Frank Field

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list those police forces which have initiated training in racial awareness as recommended in the Scarman report.

Mr. Hurd

Lord Seaman's recommendation in paragraph 5.28 of his report was that training courses designed to develop the understanding that good community relations are not merely necessary but essential to good policing should be compulsory from time to time in a police officer's career up to and including the rank of superintendent. This recommendation is being implemented at national, regional and local level. A variety of courses are now available for all police officers which contain elements designed to increase human and racial awareness.
