asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many hospital beds per population there are in each health area in England

[pursuant to his reply, 13 February 1984, c. 96]: The latest available information is given in the following table. This does not include beds in hospitals managed by the boards of governors and special health authorities for the London postgraduate teaching hospitals. The figures are not a true indication of the level of service available in different districts because many patients are treated outside their district of residence, and more specialised services may be concentrated as a matter of policy in hospitals serving a number of districts.
