HC Deb 07 March 1984 vol 55 cc591-2W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will encourage the extension of signposting and publicity for leisure cycle route projects undertaken by local authorities; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

Prescribed signs for leisure cycle routes are available and if other types of sign are proposed, my Department will consider authorising them. Publicity is a matter for each local authority.

Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps have been taken by his Department in the last 12 months to revise road design standards to take account of cyclists.

Mrs. Chalker

No changes have been made in the last 12 months in road design standards relating to cycling, but advice is being prepared on junctions where cyclists can be at risk.

Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what projects have been carried out by his Department in the last 12 months in respect of the following cycle experiments in urban areas (a) use of bus facilities by cyclists, (b) marked cyclepaths at busy junctions and(c) exemptions for cyclists from traffic orders.

Mrs. Chalker

The information requested is as follows:

  1. (a) None.
  2. (b) One—signal controlled crossing at Albion gate, Hyde park, London.
  3. (c) One—cyclists were exempted from a traffic regulation order affecting other traffic in Albion street as Dart of the Albion gate signal controlled crossing.
