Mr. Holt

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many television licence evaders were prosecuted in each of the last five years; what is the average fine imposed; and how much each year for the past five years has been paid to the Post Office for their services in connection with television licensing.

The number of people prosecuted for using a television set without a licence were as follows:

It is estimated that in 1983 the average fine was about £55 for offences involving colour sets and about £27 for offences involving monochrone sets.

Payments to the Post Office for television licensing work in the last five financial years, including VAT and adjustments for under or over payments in previous years, are as follows:
