Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of people not citizens of the United Kingdom receiving supplementary benefit in 1982–83 and what is the current figure for 1983–84, including figures for claimants from each of the other European Economic Community countries.

Details of the citizenship or nationality of persons claiming supplementary benefit are not generally collected. However, some statistics are available for nationals of the European Community* and of certain other European countries. The following table shows the number of awards of supplementary benefit to nationals of these countries, recorded during the years 1982 and 1983 and the first two months of 1984.
