Mr. Hume

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what statistics are held by the Department of Education for Northern Ireland relating to the numbers of students, both living at home and living away from home, who have claimed for costs beyond the £50 already provided within their grant and the amount of such claims; and if he will give a breakdown of the numbers making such claims of each of the education and library boards.

Statistics of this type are not normally maintainted. However, a special survey was recently undertaken for the academic year 1981–82 of the number of students in receipt of mandatory awards from education and library boards who claimed travel expenses in excess of £50. The results were as follows:
