asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has as to what percentage of sociology graduates over the past 10 years have successfully obtained employment; and if he will list the categories of jobs that they have obtained.

All of the information required is not available in the form requested. Information covering the first destination of both university and polytechnic first degree graduates as at 31 December of the year in which they graduate is available only since 1976. The percentage of sociology students of known destination—including those undertaking further education and training — successfully obtaining permanent employment is as follows:

Until 1982, about 30 per cent. undertook further education or training; in 1982, 25 per cent. of the original total did so.
