HC Deb 06 March 1984 vol 55 c510W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in what ways the United Kingdom motor car industry has taken advantage of the larger home market created by United Kingdom membership of the European Economic Community.

Mr. Butcher

The United Kingdom motor industry's support for Community membership reflects the importance of a large European home market as a base for efficient production. Membership has also reinforced the inevitable pressures on the United Kingdom industry to rationalise and regain competitiveness, loss of which had caused the industry's continued decline over recent years. It is an indication of the industry's response to these opportunities and pressures that United Kingdom car plants can now improve their market position against their European neighbours.
