HC Deb 06 March 1984 vol 55 c536W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the number of manufacturing jobs in England each year since 1960 broken down by industrial groups, the peak employment in each group since 1954, the latest available figure and the number currently unemployed in each group.

Mr. Alan Clark

Consistent estimates of employees in employment are available for England for June each year from 1965. The following table gives the numbers of employees in employment for broad groups of manufacturing industries from 1965 to 1983, analysed according to the 1968 standard industrial classification (an analysis according to the 1980 SIC is not available prior to 1971). The year, within that period, in which a group's mid year employment was the greatest is indicated by an asterisk. the figures for 1982 and 1983 are provisional. The industrial analysis of the numbers unemployed is no longer available from the monthly unemployment count.

Mr. Gummer

The figures requested in the first two parts of the question are not available for geographical areas smaller than wages inspectorate divisions. The inspectorate has not prosecuted any employers in Waltham Forest in the past four years.
