HC Deb 06 March 1984 vol 55 cc562-3W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services which long-stay hospitals for the mentally handicapped have fixed dates for their closure; when the remaining long-stay hospitals will have a timetable for closure; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

I list those hospitals for the mentally handicapped which we know health authorities plan to close by specific dates. We expect the strategic plans regional health authorities are required to submit by the end of March 1985 to include plans for further closures as part of the process of replacing unsuitable hospital care with a range of small-scale locally based residential and other services in the community.
