HC Deb 06 March 1984 vol 55 c557W
Mr. Fry

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what would be the amount remitted to British Rail if it paid fuel rebate duty in full but was entitled to a similar rebate to road stage carriage services.

Mr. David Mitchell

British Rail paid £6.6 million in 1983 in excise duty on gas oil. Excise duty on the same volume of diesel fuel would have been £117.7 million. Stage carriage bus operators receive 100 per cent. rebate on diesel fuel duty.
