HC Deb 05 March 1984 vol 55 c445W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the specialist claims control exercise carried out in Kirkby.

Dr. Boyson

The exercise in Kirkby was carried out during the period 10 January 1983 to 8 April 1983. Two hundred and twenty cases were examined and as a result benefit either ceased or was reduced in 88 of these cases.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what have been the recorded benefits saving of the work of the specialist claims unit in England, Wales and Scotland, respectively, since its inception.

Dr. Boyson

Recorded benefit savings arising from the work of specialist claims control since its introduction on a national basis in November 1981 until mid-January 1984 amount to £36 million in Great Britain. Some £3 million of that total can be identified as savings recorded in Scotland but separate figures have not been maintained for Wales since the creation of the Wales and South Western region in spring 1982 and could be obtained now only at disproportionate cost.
