HC Deb 05 March 1984 vol 55 cc427-8W
Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many houses are owned by Southwark council, and how many flats and maisonettes.

Sir George Young

The required information is not available centrally for the whole council housing stock. Figures collected by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy show that, at April 1983, excluding 8,145 acquired or purchased dwellings and 3,145 dwellings with 4 or more bedrooms, Southwark borough council owned 3,028 houses (including bungalows) and 47,860 flats (including maisonettes) with 1 to 3 bedrooms.

Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is the estimated total number of vacant dwellings in Southwark as a percentage of the total housing stock;

(2) how many dwellings in the London borough of Southwark are estimated (a) to be unfit for human habitation, (b) to lack one or more basic amenity and (c) to be in need of major repair.

Sir George Young

The council's latest estimates, contained in its housing investment programme return for 1 April 1983, are in the Library.

Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many houses and how many flats have been sold by Southwark council since October 1980.

Sir George Young

Southwark borough council has reported sales of 599 houses and 169 flats from October 1980 to September 1983.

Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has as to the average rent for a council dwelling in Southwark compared with the national average council rent and as to the percentage of Southwark council tenants who are in receipt of housing benefit.

Sir George Young

Information supplied in respect of their tenants by Southwark borough council to the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, the Department of Employment and my Department, is as follows:

£
Average gross weekly rent (excluding rates, heating charges, etc): April 1983 15.55
Per cent.
Tenants receiving housing benefit (certificated or standard rebates): end of November 1983 50.2

The average gross weekly rent for tenants of all English councils in April was £13.97.
