HC Deb 05 March 1984 vol 55 c449W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give details of (a) the numbers in training to become consultant nephrologists in the National Health Service, (b) the number of suitably qualified individuals seeking such employment in the National Health Service in 1983 and (c) the number of consultant nephrologists who trained within the National Health Service, but who are now practising outside the service in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. John Patten

At 30 September 1983 in England there were 15 senior registrars and 36 registrars in the National Health Service in the specialty of nephrology, of whom 4 and 8 respectively held honorary contracts. In addition, some of those training in general medicine may develop a special interest in nephrology. No information is available centrally on the number of qualified nephrologists who sought consultant posts in 1983, or on the number who trained within the National Health Service and are now working outside it.
