HC Deb 05 March 1984 vol 55 c464W
Mr. Mason

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs will be provided under the community programme, especially for the longer-term unemployed in South Yorkshire and the Barnsley travel-to-work area, in the current year; and at what cost.

Mr. Peter Morrison

At the end of January, there were 3,823 long-term unemployed people in south Yorkshire employed on temporary jobs in projects supported under the community programme. This figure includes 668 jobs in the Barnsley travel-to-work area.

Places are allocated according to the incidence of longterm unemployment and south Yorkshire's share is 4,596 of which 670 places would be in the Barnsley travel-to-work area. The timescale for achieving this allocation is currently under review.

The estimated cost of a place is about £4,300 for each full year of employment.
