HC Deb 02 March 1984 vol 55 cc389-90W
Mr. Foster

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied that sufficient sensitively designed schemes are available in mode A courses to cater for the young offenders, the handicapped and the less able youngsters currently catered for in mode B courses.

Mr. Peter Morrison

Mode A youth training schemes are designed to cater for a very wide range of youngsters. Although there will be some reduction in mode B1 provision in 1984–85 it will still offer places to up to 70,000 youngsters and we are satisfied that the youth training scheme, as a whole, will have suitable provision to meet the needs of all the youngsters who seek places in it.

Mr. Foster

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will ensure that young offenders at present on mode B courses of the youth training scheme will not be adversely affected by the reduction in the number of mode B courses.

Mr. Peter Morrison

There is no reason why planned changes in the balance of provision should prevent suitable training places continuing to be available to meet the needs of all young people on the youth training scheme.

Mr. Foster

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will publish the results of inquiries undertaken by the Manpower Services Commission into the health and safety provisions of the youth training scheme;

(2) if he will ensure that every work place involved in the youth training scheme will be inspected by Manpower Services Commission staff to ensure adequate health and safety provisions for trainees.

Mr. Peter Morrison

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
