HC Deb 02 March 1984 vol 55 c364W
Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will show, using 1983–84 data, the loss of the following current receipts to the Exchequer (a) income tax, (b) national insurance and (c) national insurance surcharge, caused by an increase of 100,000 in registered unemployment (excluding school leavers) in the private sector and using the assumptions contained in the article on pages 4 to 7 of "Economic Progress Report No. 130", February 1981.

Mr. Moore

Estimates of the changes in income tax and national insurance revenues associated with a change in the level of unemployment depend on the assumed causes of the unemployment. The ranges which can be produced are so wide that it is no longer thought sensible to estimate such figures.
