Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many young people have been unemployed for more than one year (a) in the Liverpool travel-to-work area and (b) in the Merseyside special development area at the latest date; and what were the figures in June 1979.

[pursuant to his reply, 28 February 1984, c. 118]: The following table gives, for the areas specified, the number of registered unemployed aged under 18 years in July 1979 (not available for June) and the number of unemployed claimants aged under 18 years in January 1984, who have been unemployed for more than 52 weeks, together with the figures for October 1982 on both the registration and claimant bases.
