§ 27. Mr. William Powellasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied with the present operation of the common sheepmeat régime.
§ Mr. MacGregorThe sheepmeat regime has substantially benefited British producers, through the variable premium on fat lambs and the annual premium on 323W breeding ewes, and British consumers, through the use of deficiency payments rather than intervention and by maintaining access to supplies of New Zealand lamb at a reduced tariff rate. There have been difficulties over our exports, however, and we shall be directing attention to this aspect during the discussions on the Commission's review of the régime.
