HC Deb 01 March 1984 vol 55 c280W
Mr. Porter

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people guilty of (a) murder and (b) manslaughter are currently in prison.

Mr. Hurd

On 31 December 1983 about 1,440 persons were serving sentences for murder and about 460 were serving sentences for manslaughter in Prison Department establishments in England and Wales. Of these totals about 30 and 10 respectively had been previously released on licence and subsequently re-called to prison.
