§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what studies are being made in his Department of new ways of treating drug addicts; and if he will make a statement indicating the time scale of such studies.
§ Mr. John PattenWe have commissioned two research projects which will throw more light on ways of treating drug addicts. One three-year project to examine a system of satellite drug clinics (using different settings, for example specialist clinic, general psychiatric services, probation facilities) is to start in May. The other project —to examine factors associated with continued abstinence from drugs or relapse after in-patient treatment—is to start in July and last two and half years.
