HL Deb 28 June 1984 vol 453 c1142WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many consultants in the National Health Service have been given merit awards since the scheme was instituted to the latest convenient date and, of these, how many were of ethnic origins other than European.

Lord Glenarthur

The total number of consultants and community physicians granted awards from the inception of the scheme in 1948 to the end of 1983 is approximately 10,500. We have no means of identifying the ethnic origin of award holders from the available records.
