asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many of the United Kingdom's service personnel have passed grades I, II and HI of the services' examination; how many have no pass at any level or its civilian equivalent; and if he will make a statement.

There is no overall services' examination. Each service has its own requirements for entry and subsequent promotion. I refer my hon. Friend to table 6.10 in the Statement on Defence Estimates 1984, part 2, for details of selected qualification obtained under service sponsorship.
