Mr. William Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list the members of Enterprise Ulster whom he has appointed since May 1979, together with their occupational background and political and religious affiliations, where known, and their geographical base; and if he will give the same information about those whom they replaced.

Mr. Butler

Enterprise Ulster was established as a public corporation under the Enterprise Ulster (Northern Ireland) Order 1973 as a job creation and training body. Its term of office was extended for a period of five years from 1 April 1978 and again for a further three years from 1 April 1983.

Appointments to Enterprise Ulster since May 1979 are as follows. I do not believe it would be appropriate for me to publicise further personal details of the members.

The following board members were serving in May 1979:

Mr. Scott

The Sports Council for Northern Ireland is constituted under the Recreation and Youth Service (Northern Ireland) Order 1973. Appointments since May 1979 are as follows:

  • Mr. G. Hunter, County Tyrone
  • Mr. J. McCann, Belfast
  • Mr. J. Montgomery, County Antrim
  • The late Lt. Col. J. T. Sleator OBE, DL, Belfast
  • Miss D. Wadsworth, Belfast

Mr. H. E. Smith CBE, VRD, BA, LLB, was appointed as Chairman in September 1979 to replace Mr. P. Shea CBE, OBE, whose term of office expired on 31 March 1979.

Mr. T. Smyth was appointed as an employees' representative from September 1979 as a replacement for the late Mr. R. Allen MBE, JP, who retired on 31 March 1979.

Mr. J. Montgomery resigned in November 1980 and was not replaced.

Mr. Richard Gordon was appointed in September 1981 to replace the late Lt. Col. J. T. Sleator OBE, DL.

During 1981–82 the Minister of State decided to restrict membership to the statutory minimum of a chairman and seven members. As a result of this decision three founder members, Professor W. Black and Messrs. W. V. Hogg and J. McCann were not reappointed.

Mr. C. H. Bigg was appointed as an employers.' representative from October 1981 as a replacement for Mr. S. Craigs OBE.

The Board was reconstituted on 1 April 1983 and the following persons were appointed:

Mr. F. Guckian (Londonderry) was appointed in January 1984 to replace Mr. K. J. Conlon.

Mr. W. Doran (Belfast) was appointed as an employers' representative to replace Mr. R. J. Gordon from January 1984.
