Mr. Deakins

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will consider a new pay system for the Civil Service to ensure that those employed are continuously provided with incentives to improve performance, on the lines of that proposed for the National Audit Office by the Public Accounts Commission.

As has been announced, the Government are considering ways of introducing merit pay into the Civil Service in the light of the recommendations of the Megaw report (Report of the Inquiry into Civil Service Pay, Cmnd. 8590).
