HL Deb 25 June 1984 vol 453 cc774-5WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why the prisoner whose number is B66506 is being kept in Parkhurst even though medical advice has been given that, having undergone an ileostomy, he needs 24-hour access to a lavatory which cannot be provided at that prison; why no employment is provided for him, so that he receives only £1.21 after deductions; why he has been classified as Category B although he has never been convicted of any offence of violence, and why his petition to the Secretary of State, asking for a move, remains unanswered after nine weeks.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Elton)

This inmate's security category and prison location have been reviewed in the light of his petitions. He will be transferred to Blundeston Prison as a Category C prisoner as soon as possible, and he has now been told of this in reply to his petition.

His earlier security classification and allocation to Parkhurst were the result of assessment by a long-term allocation centre which took into account the length of his sentence, his previous prison record and medical needs.

The work available for inmates at Parkhurst was not suitable for this inmate, for medical reasons.
