Mr. Canavan

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will make a statement about the up-to-date state of the negotiations on the future of Hong Kong.

The content of the talks is confidential. The sixteenth round in the second, more detailed, phase took place in Peking on 12 and 13 June. The agreed press statement described the talks as "useful and constructive". It announced the establishment ofa working group to consider documents submitted by the two sides in pursuit of their objective of reaching agreement as soon as possible on the question of Hong Kong".

The next round will be on 27 and 28 June, again in Peking.
