asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if it is proposed to reduce in any way the number of villas for mentally and physically handicapped patients at South Ockenden hospital, Essex; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

In line with national policy for the development of services for mentally handicapped people, the health authorities are planning to reduce significantly the number of patients in South Ockendon hospital. Details of specific proposals are not available centrally, but will be subject to the formal consultation procedure.
