asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish the figures for the last five available years for spending in actual and real terms by local education authorities in England on the maintenance of school buildings, using as a base for the real term figures, expenditure for the most recently available year.

However, the total recurrent expenditure by local education authorities in England on the repair and maintenance of school buildings and grounds for the period 1978–79 to 1982–83 and on buildings alone for the period 1981–82 to 1982–83 were as follows:

On 31 March 1975, the end of the financial year in which the recommendations of the Houghton committee were implemented, the average salary of full-time teachers in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools in England and Wales stood at £3,390. The comparable figure today is about £9,100.
