asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the size of the increase of police forces of England and Wales since 1979; and what is the total number employed at the present time.

Since 31 December 1979 the total strength of the police service in England and Wales has increased by 7,813 to 121,122 at the end of April 1984.
