asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent discussions he has held with the Association of Chief Police Officers regarding the policing of picket lines to ensure that persons wishing to attend their place of work are able to do so without intimidation or obstruction.

On 16, 23 and 27 March, on behalf of his colleagues in England and Wales, the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers reported to the Home Secretary on police operations in relation to the miners' dispute. On 29 March, my right hon. and learned Friend discussed the cost of the operations in Nottinghamshire with members of the police authority. The chief constable was present. He also receives daily, via the National Reporting Centre, a report from the chief constables of the areas concerned, and from the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers about the operation of the National Reporting Centre.
