HC Deb 21 June 1984 vol 62 cc237-8W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many day care places for the young physically handicapped have been cut since May 1979.

Mr. Newton

Day care for physically handicapped people is provided in a number of ways by both local authorities and voluntary bodies. The only statistics available centrally are for local authority day care places. The latest information is as follows. It does not necessarily reflect trends in the overall pattern of day care provision, of which these places form only a part.

Local Authority Day Care Places for Younger Physically Handicapped People—England
*31 March 1979 31 March 1983
Day centres for physically handicapped people 10,475 9,120
Day provision in residential homes 81 194
"Mixed" day centres (for physically handicapped and other client groups) †3,793 †4,049
Total 14,349 13,363
