HC Deb 21 June 1984 vol 62 c193W
Mr. Latham

asked the hon. Member for Wokingham, as representing the Church Commissioners, what financial provision was made in each of the last four calendar years for the former wives of parochial clergy who have either been divorced or otherwise separated from their husbands; and whether he will make a statement on the general policy on this matter adopted by the commissioners.

Sir William van Straubenzee

The primary responsibility for the welfare of clergymen and their families rests with the bishop of the diocese in which they serve. It follows that nationwide statistics are not available. A working group set up by the House of Bishops is at present considering advice to the House upon the exercise of that responsibility in relation to wives of parochial clergy who have been divorced or otherwise separated from their husbands, including financial provision. At the request of the group, the commissioners are assisting its deliberations.
