asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many monkeys were imported into the United Kingdom for each year from 1979 to 1983 and in 1984 to date; and how many went to centres carrying out scientific experiments.

Precise statistics are not available. However, the following estimated figures for the import of monkeys are available from the statistics assembled by my Department as part of its responsibilities under the convention of international trade in endangered species:
