HC Deb 21 June 1984 vol 62 cc244-7W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the percentage of youth unemployment as compared to the total of unemployed at the latest available date.

Mr. Alan Clark

On 5 April 1984, the rate of unemployment in the United Kingdom for unemployed claimants aged under 18 years was 18.1 per cent. The corresponding rate for unemployed claimants of all ages was 13 per cent. Rates by age are estimated and, although presented to one decimal place, should not be regarded as implying precision to that degree.

Dr. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the figures for the number of unemployed in the Copeland constituency, by age, sex, and duration of unemployment for 1 January 1979 and for 1 January 1984.

The following is the available information for the Whitehaven travel-to-work area which corresponds closely to the Copeland parliamentary constituency. The analysis for January 1979 relates to registered unemployed and that for January 1984 is for unemployed claimants.

The comparisons between the figures are affected by the change in the basis of unemployment count in October 1982 and by the 1983 Budget provisions, which meant that
