asked Her Majesty's Government: What was the total remuneration paid to Mr. MacGregor as chairman of the British Steel Corporation and what was the amount paid, or what is due to be paid, to Mr. MacGregor's nominated US associates.

The British Steel Corporation's Annual Report and Accounts for 1980–81 to 1982–83 record the following total emoluments (excluding pension scheme contributions) of Mr. MacGregor as chairman of the BSC:

1980– 81 (9 months) £ 37,864
1981– 82 £ 51.750
1982– 83 £ 51,960

The estimated figure, on the same basis, for the five months to the end of August 1983 (when Mr. MacGregor ceased to be chairman of the British Steel Corporation) is ₣ 22,187.

A statment regarding the payments made, or due to be made, by the Government to Lazard Freres of New York in respect of Mr. MacGregor's chairmanship of BSC was included in a Written Answer to the noble Lord, Lord Grimond, on 26th April 1984 [Official Report; columns 250– 251].
