HC Deb 14 June 1984 vol 61 cc534-5W
Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of sentenced young people held in (a) Lincoln prison, and (b) Shrewsbury prison during the week beginning 4 June.

Mr. Hurd

Central records, which are approximate, show for 30 April 1984, the latest date for which information is readily available, one sentenced person aged under 17 in Lincoln prison and none in Shrewsbury prison.

Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many young persons sentenced to periods of youth custody were eligible for and received parole during the first six months of the scheme's operation.

Mr. Hurd

Information in precisely the form requested is not immediately available. However, in the period from 24 May 1983 (when the new young offender scheme came into operation) to 31 December 1983, 279 young offenders were eligible for parole of whom 153 (54.8 per cent.) were recommended for parole.

Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of sentenced young people serving their sentences in youth custody centres during the week beginning 4 June.

Mr. Hurd

Central records, which are approximate, show for 30 April 1984, the latest date for which information is readily available, about 570 sentenced persons aged under 17 in youth custody centres in England and Wales.

Mr. Bermingham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of sentenced persons between the ages of 17 and 21 years being held in (a) adult prisons and (b) adult remand prisons during the week beginning 4 June.

Mr. Hurd

I shall reply as soon as possible.
